The IRS has announced the federal income tax brackets and standard deductions for 2027. While the seven federal income tax rates remain unchanged, the income thresholds have increased to account for inflation.
These annual adjustments help prevent taxpayers from moving into higher tax brackets simply because their income increases with the cost of living.
2027 Federal Income Tax Brackets
The federal income tax rates remain at 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. The following brackets apply to taxable income earned in 2027, with tax returns generally filed in 2028.

These brackets apply to taxable income, which is generally your income after applicable adjustments and deductions.
2027 Standard Deduction Increases
The standard deduction is also increasing for 2027. Taxpayers who don't itemize deductions can generally subtract the applicable standard deduction from their income when calculating federal taxable income.

How Do Federal Tax Brackets Work?
Federal income taxes use a marginal tax system, meaning different portions of your taxable income are taxed at different rates.
For example, a married couple filing jointly with $150,000 in taxable income in 2027 would fall within the 22% marginal tax bracket. However, they wouldn't pay 22% on the entire amount.
The first $25,600 would be taxed at 10%, income between $25,600 and $104,050 would be taxed at 12%, and only the remaining taxable income would be taxed at 22%.
Moving into a higher tax bracket doesn't mean all your income is taxed at that higher rate.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The updated federal tax brackets and standard deductions provide a useful reference as individuals and families begin planning for the upcoming tax year. Your actual tax liability will depend on your income, filing status, deductions, credits, and other circumstances.
